Harassment Contact Persons at Events
At the heart of harassment contact person activities is outreach-based equality work, aimed at preventing and addressing potential harassment and discrimination. In practice, this means that SHYH ry offers trained volunteer harassment contact persons, responsible for promoting safer spaces, to work at events.
A socially responsible event organizer considers not only physical but also psychological and social safety. The presence of harassment contact persons at events enhances participants’ sense of security and creates an environment where everyone can enjoy the event without fear of harassment. The principles of equality and safety are integrated into the event’s general safety arrangements, achieved in close collaboration with security professionals and first aid personnel.
Why Have Harassment Contact Persons in Your Event?
Incorporating safer space principles strengthens psychological safety and equality at events. This, in turn, makes the event more attractive and encourages participants to return in the future. The mere presence of harassment contact persons helps to prevent harassment during the event. Their outreach work makes the values of safer spaces and equality visible, while also preemptively mitigating potential conflicts.
The role of harassment contact persons includes sensitively supporting individuals who have experienced inappropriate behavior or discrimination, providing them with assistance, and guiding them to appropriate services when needed. All discussions with harassment contact persons are strictly confidential.
Our volunteers have undergone SaferSpace Host Education, which equips them with the skills to anticipate and handle harassment situations correctly. Harassment contact persons always work in pairs at events and are supported by a team leader, who coordinates collaboration with authorities and stakeholders when necessary.
